LumiraDx

I have spent a large portion of my design career working with LumiraDx, contributing to their User Experience across many touchpoints - primarily UI/UX, Industrial Design and Packaging & Labelling.

I wanted to give a small glimpse of some of the work I have been involved in that I am able to talk about given confidentiality obligations.

A short video to explain who LumiraDx are and what they do in their own words:

User Experience & User Interface (UX/UI)

Since 2016/2017 I have continuously contributed to the user interface design package, including:

  • User Interface Requirement & Workflow design and specification

  • UI design and visual design specification

  • Animation design & specification

  • Defining and documenting all written language shown on the interface (from 2020)

  • Creating the overarching style guide to define the UX/UI principles of the platform

The development of this package required balancing market, user and business needs alongside technical constraints and constant moving timelines set by the wider business. This was all while working with an international team of developers (UK/USA/Germany) and managers (Global, notably: UK/USA/European sites/South Africa/Japan).

This package of work allowed me to see all aspects of the development process: creating the idea for a feature, executing the design work, finalising and signing off the specification for implementation. This was used directly as part of Lumira’s submission to international regulatory bodies for use on the market.

Industrial Design

When I joined LumiraDx in 2020, I supported on various aspects of industrial design work - from concepts, prototypes through to manufacture.

Packaging & Labelling

From the initial concept work on the platform packaging to many revisions of all printed instructions to recently defining a new template for all future Quick Reference Guides, I worked with members of LumiraDx to bring the same consistent user experience across the printed material as we had on the digital interface.

All instructional materials were designed to meet CLIA Waiver standards and as a result, produced simple and intuitively usable instructions.

IFU and Packaging consistent imagery. Designed to showcase the product and subconsciously instruct how to use the device. Final iteration of artwork completed by 1HQ branding agency.

Impact

LumiraDx’s platform device has had tremendous global impact across it’s suite of testing capabilities, particularly in the fight against COVID during the pandemic. The platform was rolled out across medical institutions globally, from cutting edge hospitals to remote community pop-up locations. Commercial partnerships with the likes of Boots (UK) and CVS (USA) provided additional access to LumiraDx’s testing suite.

Support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has helped LumiraDx provide testing capabilities in lesser developed regions, such as remote rural African communities, and helped to begin to expand the platform to tackle additional diseases such as Tuberculosis.

Many hands have touched and influenced the outcome and ongoing development of the LumiraDx platform and ecosystem, from my colleagues back at Team Consulting, Design Director Nick Long who I worked under all these years and a wide variety of LumiraDx employees, to the external and internal software developers, hardware engineers, testers, marketing team, human factors specialists, assay scientists and project managers.
